Christ broke the power of sin.
Grace sets you free to live a sinless life because sin is utterly powerless against it. The Spirit gives grace to heal, prophesy, speak in foreign tongues, and accomplish all God is calling you to be and do. Because the Spirit lives in you, you can walk by the Spirit and put to death the misdeeds of the flesh, right?
But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live (Rom 8:13).
And, thankfully, 2000 years ago Grace brought salvation to ALL mankind (Titus 2:11-12), and teaches us…to live with a sin nature? To wrestle with sin? To sometimes sin and sometimes not? No.
It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age (v12).
The word “teaches” in that scripture comes from the Greek paideuó: discipline, educate, train. Grace will train you! Keep you in line! And we access Grace “through faith” (Eph 2:8).
Faith is Trust
Faith is Trust. In plain language, you access Grace, the power for godliness, through Trust. Don’t trust God to come through, and you’ll strive. Trust that God can and will cause you to desire real fruit over fruit loops, so to speak, and then you’ll begin to experience the Grace for that shift. This is the way of the Kingdom.
You don’t fast your way out of sinful thoughts; you Trust your way into glorious ones. You don’t beat yourself up with religious, formulaic works to obtain what God freely gave as a gift. You Trust. You learn to wait, and soon discover your strength renewed. Self-control, a sweet fruit of the Spirit, enables you to not have an answer, and still rest, wait, Trust. You become discerning of the body’s striving impulse contrasted with the cheerful prompting of the Holy Spirit. I’ve overcome lifelong addictions simply by trusting the Holy Spirit to give me something BETTER in place of the counterfeit. That’s Grace! And though it takes faith to stand and wait for God’s provision, God always comes through. That’s why “the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength'” (Isa 30:15).
I urge you to hear Pastor Zack’s excellent and clear message (linked below) concerning your NEW sin-free nature. For all who are in Christ have received a circumcision not by any man’s hand, but the sin nature has been cut away (Col 2:11 NLT).
Righteousness by Faith
Your right standing with God is a finished work accomplished through Jesus Christ, and experienced through Faith. Period. Our efforts to earn favor or achieve righteousness are literally an insult to the Cross. If you could do it, Christ died needlessly (Gal 2:21).
So why do we still make mistakes? Just as doing something wrong doesn’t make you wrong by nature; committing an act of sin doesn’t make you sinful by nature. You are a new creation. Sin habits signal that you’re trying to satisfy a need by your own strength, a method of the “old man.” Romans 12:2 says: be transformed by the renewing of your MIND! It’s not your nature, or even behaviors that need “fixin’ — it’s what you believe.
I promise you: God has what satisfies…right now. Ask for Grace to say YES to the heavenly (godly) thing (Titus 2:12). He’ll meet your need exceedingly abundantly beyond all your wildest dreams. And not by power, nor by might, but by the Holy Spirit.
So, where there is sin, there is 1) a lie, and 2) a need for Grace. Hence, where sin abounds, grace abounds much more. You either strive to self-improve, or commune with the Holy Spirit who imparts Grace. Either, or. Never both.
Zack Wechsler: Why Grace Is Not A License to Sin
As Pastor Zack says in the recording (below), the opposite of Law is not Grace but Faith. You either have to work for God’s favor, power, and fruit; or you Trust that it’s already yours. And that Trust makes allll the difference. But you can’t serve two masters or you’ll love one and hate the other. You got to choose ONE.
